Renault Russia opens a new chapter in the history of models designed specifically for the Russian market. The new Renault Kaptur targets mainly city residents who value distinctive design, customization options and advanced technology as high as reliability and confidence on any surface type. Renault Russia took into account all the wishes of the owners of the first-generation model, as a result Renault Kaptur has taken a big step forward in terms of technology, performance, comfort, and versatility in Russian conditions.

On the exterior, the refreshed Renault Kaptur boasts a new grille, LED headlights (depending on the version) and new color options, including the Blue Iron bright blue for the body and Gris Platine silver for the roof, plus 16- and 17-inch alloy wheels.

Keeping its unique style, Renault Kaptur received a completely changed interior with new finishing materials and improved ergonomics. For example, the steering wheel column is now height and reach adjustable, while seat heater buttons moved to the central console. Renault Kaptur joined the Renault Arkana coupe-crossover as the second Alliance model built on a next generation modular SUV platform. The first-generation Renault Kaptur set a new benchmark for design in the compact urban SUV segment. The car’s concept turned out to be so successful that designers of the new Kaptur decided to only add a few eye-catching and bold accents, for instance, the car received a new grille, new body and roof color options and stylish alloy wheels as standard. The body’s streamlined and elegant silhouette is highlighted by spectacular details, and according to statistics most Renault Kaptur buyers prefer contrasting roof colors.

The new Renault Kaptur's interior was designed taking into account customer wishes. In addition to a refreshed design, new finishing materials and improved ergonomics, it received advanced multimedia solutions, in-car ambient lighting and a BOSE® premium-level audio system, plus such relevant and demanded features in Russia as a heated steering wheel and rear seats

2.1 Expressive exterior

The front end of the new Renault Kaptur is dominated by a new elegant grille with chrome inserts that adds brightness and agility to the car’s image. The crossover’s standard equipment includes LED running lights with full-LED headlights available as an option.

Also, Renault Kaptur can be ordered with a new Blue Iron body color and a silver Gris Platine roof tone. This brings the choice of body colors to eight and roof tones to three making up 24 different color combinations.

Even the standard equipment level of Renault Kaptur includes 16-inch silver alloy wheels with 16- or 17-inch two-tone wheels available as an option. The exclusive Edition One version sports 17-inch wheels with new design.

Its ground clearance is 205 mm, approach angle – 23 degrees, departure angle – 31 degree. Designers of the new Renault Kaptur took into account wishes of the owners of the previous generation model. The upgraded crossover boasts a completely revised interior and most up-to-date digital technologies and solutions, including a BOSE® premium level audio system, modern multimedia system and the newest features in the segment for comfortable driving, such as around view monitor and blind spots monitoring.

The most eye-catching part of the cabin is the dashboard, which, in addition to an updated design, features soft plastic finish pleasing to the touch.

The second-row armrest offers two USB connectors to allow rear passengers to charge their smartphones and stay in touch all the time. 03 DRIVING PLEASURE

Renault Kaptur brings the pleasure of driving an urban crossover to a new level. While keeping its unique features that won hearts of customers, the car received a new TCe 150 turbocharged engine, next generation X-Tronic CVT and is now based on the Alliance’s modular SUV platform.

Renault Kaptur combines tried-and-true and reliable power units with innovative technologies. Retaining its legendary smooth ride and high-performance suspension, Renault Kaptur received a brand-new power steering. Four-wheel drive versions are offered with an independent rear suspension.

The new Kaptur is Renault’s second model in the Russian market equipped with a TCe 150 turbocharged petrol engine (150 hp) designed jointly by the Alliance and Daimler. And the X-Tronic CVT allows to realize the potential of this engine to the fullest extent. Renault Kaptur is available with a front-wheel drive or intelligent four-wheel drive system with three modes.

3.1 Chassis: driving pleasure and high comfort level

•The upgraded Renault Kaptur is based on the Alliance’s modular SUV platform. Retaining its legendary smooth ride, the car received a significantly improved handling and off-road capability.

•A brand-new power steering minimizes the necessary steering wheel turning force on a parking lot and ensures stability at high speeds.

•A new front subframe and independent multi-link rear suspension for four-wheel drive versions, 205-mm ground clearance and excellent geometric passability.

Thanks to a unique chassis balance that combines maneuverability in the city and impressive off-road capability in the countryside, Renault Kaptur has won the hearts of numerous customers. The new crossover kept Renault iconic features such as comfort and high-performance suspension, and at the same time set a new standard of handling.

For example, its variable ratio power steering gives a 30% lighter steering feel during parking and at the same time makes driving at high speeds more comfortable and precise. A steering rack-mounted power mechanism and new front subframe ensure crisp feedback and isolate the steering wheel from vibrations and knocks caused by road undulations both on straights and in corners. Steering gear ratio reduced by 10% compared to the predecessor improves maneuverability and simplifies driving in the city: it is only three turns from lock to lock. The steering wheel column is reach and height adjustable.

The new Renault Kaptur comes with a choice of two rear suspension options. All-wheel drive versions feature an independent multi-link suspension with a double wishbone and trailing arm that brings optimal combination of comfort and reliable handling. Also, the independent rear suspension improves geometric passability making Renault Kaptur even more off-road capable. Front-wheel drive versions come with a semi-independent rear suspension that is famous for its high performance and is perfect for riding on poor roads.

3.2. New powertrain: dynamic performance and nice fuel efficiency

•The new TCe 150 turbocharged engine delivers a 150 hp peak power and 250 N·m of torque starting from 1,700 rpm.

•The new generation X-Tronic CVT is effective in delivering torque and offers high comfort and low fuel consumption.

•The intelligent four-wheel drive system brings confidence on any surface thanks to dynamic torque distribution.

Renault Kaptur is the second Alliance car in the Russian market to offer the all-new TCe 150 turbocharged petrol engine. This 1,330 cm3 power unit co-developed by the Alliance and Daimler engineers offers such technologies as turbocharging, direct fuel injection and dual variable valve timing. Its peak power is 150 hp and the torque of 250 N·m is available in a wide rev-range starting from 1,700 rpm.

TCe 150 uses several technological innovations. The engine block is made of an aluminum alloy, while the cylinder head features a new triangle shape. This design makes the entire unit more compact and lighter. Direct fuel injection at a pressure of 250 bar and a special combustion camera shape ensure excellent efficiency, while the Bore Spray coating plasma-sprayed on cylinder walls reduces friction and optimizes engine heat management improving its reliability and economy.

The new engine brings genuine driving pleasure thanks to improved power output and torque across a broad rev-band. Also, fuel consumption is only 7.1 l/100km in the combined cycle, which is one of the best in the SUV segment. It brings Renault Kaptur ’s driving range close to 700 kilometers.

TCe 150 uses a variable valve timing system with roller tappets and electronic control. It adapts both intake and exhaust valve operation depending on engine revs and driving conditions. As a result, it brings higher torque at low revs with the peak torque of 250 N·m reached at as low as 1,700 rpm. Combined with an electric waste gate that ensures faster and more accurate response to the accelerator pedal, the TCe 150 turbocharged engine boasts excellent responsiveness bringing a new level of agility and off-road capability.

Engineers of TCe 150 paid special attention to reliability given the driving conditions in Russia. During development, the turbocharged engines endured 40,000 hours of bench tests which corresponds to 14 years of usage 8 hours a day. Additionally, preproduction vehicles equipped with TCe 150s ran 300,000 km of validation tests in extreme driving conditions (cold and hot weather, high humidity and dry climate) and confirmed the engine’s excellent reliability. Alliance production models equipped with TCe 150 reaffirmed the results of the tests.

Thanks to a high torque available across a wide rev-range, TCe 150 is a perfect match for the X-Tronic CVT. The gear ratio range increased from 6.0 to 7.0 improves agility, while the new belt reduces pumping losses under friction by 40%. Combined with a wide range torque converter lockup, it brings a 10% better fuel economy compared to the previous generation shiftless transmission.

In addition to high performance, the transmission delivers faster response and better smoothness and reduced noise levels, while the D-Step system, which adds 7 preset artificial speeds to the automatic transmission, ensures thrilling acceleration and even more driving pleasure.

In addition to TCe 150, Renault Kaptur will be offered with a 1.6-liter petrol engine (114 hp) and a front-wheel drive mated to a manual transmission or X-Tronic CVT.

3.3 Active and passive safety

Wide use of high strength steels ensures high stiffness of the crossover’s body. Renault Kaptur safety features include four airbags (two front airbags, two side airbags) and front seatbelt pretensioners. Renault expects to gain the maximum passive safety rating in the independent ARCAP crash test program.

Also, a stiffer body contributes greatly to better comfort and handling and reduces noise and vibrations.

In terms of active safety, Renault Kaptur uses the latest Bosch 9.3 electronic stability program with electronic locking differentials that optimizes performance thanks to increased operating pressure and frequency and reduced noise and vibration.

3.4 4x4-i intelligent four-wheel drive system

Renault Kaptur is available with a front-wheel drive or intelligent four-wheel drive system with three modes: 2WD, AUTO and LOCK. In 2WD, torque is delivered only to the front wheels minimizing fuel consumption. In AUTO, the transmission automatically distributes torque depending on driving conditions. The LOCK algorithm is designed for off-road driving and can be enabled at 80 kph or below, in this mode the 4WD coupling device locks splitting torque 50:50 between the front and rear wheels.

04 INNOVATIONS FOR LIFE

Renault Russia has always paid close attention to the needs of its customers and tried to offer cars that meet and exceed their expectations. Advanced digital technologies are especially important for an urban crossover, and the new Kaptur fully follows the trend. In addition, the crossover was one of the first in the class to receive a BOSE® premium level audio system and a wide range of driver aids.

4.1 EASY LINK multimedia features

Renault Kaptur offers new generation multimedia solutions: Depending on the trim level, customers will have the choice of three systems:

•Base level multimedia system with radio, Bluetooth connectivity, USB and AUX ports.

•Radio Connect with the R&GO connected application that allows to transform a smartphone into the multimedia system screen.

•EASY LINK multimedia system with Android Auto™ and Apple CarPlay smartphone integration, and Yandex.Auto.

Renault Kaptur became the second, after Arkana, car to participate in the Alliance and Yandex cooperation program that makes Yandex the supplier of software and allows to integrate the Yandex.Auto platform into more than 2 million cars of Alliance brands within the next 5 years. The head unit with the Yandex.Auto system is installed directly at the assembly line.

Radio Connect and R&GO

Radio Connect on Renault Kaptur allows to integrate a smartphone into the car using the R&GO application. Radio Connect can mate to the R&GO application that allows to quickly and easily sync information between the car and smartphone via Bluetooth.

R&GO offers such information as mileage and fuel level, route traveled and journey time, driving behavior analysis with tips on improving efficiency and much more.

R&GO memorizes the car’s position at the parking lot and then helps find it using navigation applications installed on the smartphone, such as Yandex.Navigator, Google Maps, CoPilot, or Waze.

R&GO’s built-in player allows to listen both to the radio and music files on the smartphone, create play lists with favorite songs and adjust audio system settings in a convenient menu. Also, it allows to make phone calls using the contact list and read out incoming text messages.

EASY LINK multimedia system

The new Renault Kaptur is also offered with the EASY LINK multimedia system with an 8-inch multi-touch screen that supports control gestures like on a tablet PC or smartphone. Upon the launch, Android smartphone owners can select Android Auto™, while iPhone users – Apple CarPlay. Also, regardless of the system, users get access to the Yandex.Auto interface.

Using EASY LINK, customers can run their favorite apps on the onboard screen, such as navigation with real time traffic tips, music services, calling, etc. Also, drivers can control main functions using voice. Finally, EASY LINK allows to control the Renault Start remote engine start system and embedded navigation, play music, receive SMS and phone calls.

With Yandex.Auto, users can forget about mounting smartphone to the dashboard in favor of a system adapted to in-car use and Alice voice assistant. Yandex.Auto does not use the car as a mere hands-free set, the platform is deeply integrated with the vehicle. For example, the navigation system detects the location not only using the GPS signal, but also by gaging car wheel rotation, which makes it more accurate even when the GPS signal is poor.

Also, the system automatically switches between the day/night graphic mode depending on the actual lighting level using vehicle sensor data. The platform also can plan routes using Alice which is activated with a button on the steering wheel. When voice directions of the navigator are enabled, the volume of the audio system automatically goes down. The system supports end-to-end scenarios: a route planned on your smartphone will be displayed on the head unit's screen after connecting to the onboard computer. All these functions ensure comfort and safety using navigation behind the wheel of Renault Kaptur.

FOTA update

Kaptur versions with EASY LINK will support FOTA – multimedia system update over the air – which the company was the first to implement in the Russian market and presented for Renault Arkana in March.

With FOTA (Firmware Over the Air) customers can themselves and absolutely for free update and install new software versions for EASY LINK .

FOTA updates work similar to those on smartphones and tablet PCs and do not require phone or modem to be connected to EASY LINK. Update progress in displayed on the multimedia system screen in the Firmware Update section. EASY LINK will download firmware in the background during a ride and will offer to install it after the journey is over and the engine is stopped. When the user confirms installation, the system completes the process automatically, even if the driver is absent and EASY LINK is in the sleep mode.

4.2 BOSE® premium audio system

Since 2008, Renault have cooperated with BOSE® to design premium audio systems for its models around the world. Renault Kaptur top-of-the-range versions come with a BOSE® premium audio system with 6 performance speakers, subwoofer with the Fresh Air technology, which ensures deep low-frequency sound, and a digital amplifier with a digital signal processor.

The acoustic architecture was designed specifically for Renault Kaptur, which allowed engineers to select optimal speaker locations and offer genuine concert-quality sound. The BOSE® audio system in the new Kaptur includes:

•two 25 mm tweeters on either side of the dashboard;

•two 165 mm wide-range speakers in the front doors;

•two 165 mm wide-range speakers in the rear doors;

•one 150x230 mm subwoofer in a custom-engineered enclosure on the right side of the boot.

Kaptur drivers can configure the system selecting surround or flat sound. The BOSE® surround-sound technology combines crystal-clear sound quality with realism close to that of a live performance. The flat sound mode provides more accurate, studio-like sound performance.

4.3 Driver assistance systems

In addition to active safety systems (ABS, ESP, Hill Start Assist, etc.), the new Renault Kaptur offers other advanced solutions that help the driver in various road situations.

Depending on the trim level the car offers:

•Blind spot monitoring active at speeds from 30 to 140 kph that warns about approaching vehicles using LED signals in side mirrors;

•Cruise control with speed limiter;

•Rear view camera and around view monitor;

•Light and rain sensors;

•Electrochrome rearview mirror;

•Power-folding side mirrors.

Around view monitor

The around view monitor offered for Renault Kaptur for the first time displays footage from one of the four cameras (rear, front and side view cameras mounted on each side mirror) on the dashboard screen to make parking easier and ensure complete control over the car’s surroundings.

This function will be useful not only for maneuvering in tight city traffic and on a parking lot, but and in off-road to warn about obstacles that are out of the driver’s sight. For safety reasons, the camera shuts down automatically at speeds above 20 kph.

Blind spot monitor

Sensors in the front and rear end of the car detect other road users in blind spots and warn the driver with a light indicator embedded in the side mirrors providing assistance during lane change on multi-lane roads.

Keyless access and the Start/Stop button

Every Renault Kaptur version offers hands free functionality that allows to operate the car without getting the key card out of the pocket. In this case, the doors are locked automatically when the driver moves several steps away from the car which is additionally confirmed by an audio signal. The key card includes buttons to open and lock the car and to start the engine using Renault Start.

Renault Start remote engine start system

Another unique feature of the new Kaptur is the Renault Start remote engine start system that comes as standard and allows to safely start and heat up the engine and get a comfortable temperature inside even at extreme outdoor temperatures.

There are two ways to activate Renault Start: using a key card or on the EASY LINK screen. The system starts the car's engine to heat up or cool down the cabin when the driver presses the corresponding button on the key card at a distance of up to 200 meters. If the car is equipped with EASY LINK, the engine can be started regardless of the driver's location by programming Renault Start to start at a certain time. For extremely low temperatures, the system offers a mode that includes several sequential heating cycles (up to five).

The limited edition of Renault Kaptur comes loaded with all the options, including the “metallic” body color and Blue pack interior personalization pack, which are offered for Edition One at no extra cost. The only extra option is the navigation system.

Finally, a distinctive feature of the version is the Edition One accessory pack:
